ASG Community Outreach – 2009

Each year our guild selects a charity or organization that can benefit from our help in some way. This past year the organization we selected was the Veterans Administration hospital located in Temple, TX. We put together different cross stitch kits to have available for the family and friends who are waiting/visiting loved ones during their stay at the hospital. This program helps our military and families.

We put together a total of 96 kits, 33 of each of the different projects. One project was small patriotic hearts with two different patterns; the kit contained enough to finish them both if desired, done on perforated paper. Another project was a bookmark with the American eagle at the top completed on perforated plastic, and the third kit was a patriotic ribbon stitched on perforated paper. Each kit included all the necessary DMC floss, perforated paper or plastic, a needle and scissors. In each kit we also noted that this was provided by ASG, and we also received a thank you letter from the hospital for the donation as well. We don’t know how far our charity will reach, but hope that these kits will help those families to pass the time and create a nice gift for a loved one.

I want to thank all the members who helped at the day meeting in October to separate and make all the floss bobbins for the kits, you can imagine, there was a lot of wrapping! Another thanks goes to Cindy Hambrick for her help with getting a pair of scissors for each kit and Caroline McCauley for her help with cutting all the perforated paper and plastic.

This year our leader for community outreach is Inez Eppright. She has some ideas but would also welcome an idea that you might have. We know there are always needs within our community, but often times we are just not aware of them. The Georgetown chapter has made cough pillows for the past several years for the hospital in Georgetown, and our guild has made some angels for the maternity ward for parents who have lost a child. We welcome your ideas and input.
